When Is Your Child Ready for Orthodontic Treatment?

Prompted by growing client interest in orthodontics for kids, the post explains that the American Association of Orthodontists recommends an evaluation around age 7 -- not necessarily treatment at that age, but a good time to assess how existing and incoming teeth are developing.

Early treatment, called Phase 1, typically happens around age 8 or 9. At this stage it may be possible to correct bite problems, guide jaw growth, and create room for permanent teeth, which can reduce the odds of needing extractions later due to crowding.

The author's personal view is that early treatment isn't necessary for most patients, but can benefit children with more severe dental or skeletal conditions.

Signs suggesting a consultation may be worthwhile: noticeably crowded front teeth, protruding front teeth, early loss of baby teeth before age 5, teeth that don't meet properly, difficulty chewing or biting, a jaw that shifts when opening or closing the mouth, or thumb-sucking that continues past age 5.

Pine Smiles offers a free ongoing monitoring program that tracks young patients' growth to help determine the right time for treatment, if any -- with the goal of avoiding lengthier procedures, extractions, or surgery later on. Readers are invited to call Dr. Kim with questions.
