Let's Talk About Halloween 2020

Written for the first pandemic Halloween, this post links out to CDC guidance on staying healthy during the holidays and an Eater article covering safer Halloween ideas, then offers several lower-contact activity suggestions.

Photo scavenger hunt: teams (family members, or friends in their own neighborhoods) hunt for a shared list of spooky-themed photos ahead of October 31st.

Spooky-shape walk or run: using a mapping app like Map My Run, trace a route shaped like a ghost, bat, witch's hat, or jack-o-lantern, then compare route shapes with friends doing the same in their own neighborhoods.

Costumed Zoom dance party: a free Zoom account allows up to 100 participants for 40 minutes; the post suggests muting participants so everyone can hear their own music and building a shared costume-party playlist.

Reverse trick-or-treating: costumed kids stay in their own front yards while adults walk or drive around distributing treats -- described as a lower-risk alternative that requires some neighborhood coordination.

Whatever the activity, the post closes with a reminder to wear a mask, use hand sanitizer often, and wash hands upon returning home.
